Formerly known as SILM (Società Italiana per lo studio della Lotta alle Malerbe), SIRFI has been established in 1975, by a group of agronomists involved in weed science and management, with the aim to promote research on all the aspects related to weeds. SIRFI members belong to Universities, national research organisations such as CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - the Italian National Research Council), Research Stations founded by the Ministry of Agriculture, regional and local authorities, as well as chemical companies. Several members join also other weed societies, as the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) and the International Weed Science Society (IWSS).
