Fewer herbicides, tougher weeds: lessons from Florida vegetables and citrus

12 novembre 2026 ore 17.00

Prof. Ramdas Kanissery (University of Florida)

Florida grows much of the winter fresh market tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries sold in the United States, on raised beds covered with plastic mulch. Nutsedge punches straight through that plastic. In nearby citrus groves, already weakened by citrus greening, horseweed and other broadleaf weeds compete for water and nutrients under the tree canopy. Growers fight both problems with a shrinking list of herbicides, as regulatory changes and product withdrawals remove options almost every season. This seminar uses Florida plasticulture and citrus as a case study in managing weeds with fewer chemical tools. It presents field results on herbicide performance, crop safety, and herbicide behavior in sandy soils, then turns to new work screening Florida purple and yellow nutsedge populations for reduced herbicide sensitivity. The talk closes with the case for linking Florida resistance monitoring to European efforts, including the GIRE network in Italy.
